Autonomic NS

Definition

The part of the nervous system controlling involuntary functions including heart rate, breathing, digestion, and stress responses. It consists of two main branches: the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) systems.

Sympathetic vs. parasympathetic: how the branches interact

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) operates largely below conscious awareness, continuously regulating the body's internal environment. Its two branches work in opposition and coordination:

  • Sympathetic – Activated during perceived stress — increases heart rate, redirects blood to muscles, suppresses digestion, triggers stress hormones.
  • Parasympathetic – Active during rest and recovery — slows heart rate, promotes digestion, supports immune regulation. The vagus nerve is its primary pathway to the thoracic and abdominal organs.

Balance between these branches is critical for long-term health. Chronic sympathetic dominance is associated with cardiovascular disease, immune dysregulation, and impaired recovery — and can be assessed indirectly via heart rate variability (HRV) assessment.
