A neural reflex arc in which the vagus nerve detects inflammation and the brain responds by activating efferent vagal signals that suppress excessive or dysregulated immune responses. Its discovery established the nervous system as an active regulator of immunity.
Like other autonomic reflexes — those controlling heart rate or breathing — the inflammatory reflex operates continuously and automatically. When it is impaired, inflammation may fail to switch off, contributing to chronic conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, and sepsis. Vagus nerve stimulation research aims to engage or restore this reflex pathway.
